Young Irishman drowns on holiday in New Zealand

A 21-year-old Irish man has drowned while on holidays in New Zealand.

The incident happened today during the mid-afternoon, at around 1am Irish time.

The young Irish man was among a group of six tourists swimming in the Waikato River on the country's North Island.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that it has been notified of the death and is providing consular assistance to the man's family.
