PSNI in mourning after deaths of four officers

Investigations are continuing today into the cause of the road crash that claimed the lives of four young PSNI officers in Co Down over the weekend.

A senior police officer has been appointed to lead the investigation, a major part of which will centre on the black-box recorder from the stricken vehicle.

The 4x4 Shogun struck a wall and burst into flames on the coast road between Warrenpoint and Kilkeel in the early hours of yesterday morning.

It was responding to a call for assistance from a colleague at the time and the PSNI has confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Detectives also say there was no paramilitary involvement.

The dead officers were all men in their mid-20s to mid-30s from the south Co Down area, two of whom had young children.

The PSNI says the entire force is in a state of shock and grief following the accident.
