Investigation continues into Laois canal drowning

A Garda investigation is continuing into how a woman drowned in the Grand Canal in Co Laois over the weekend.

The woman's body was taken from the water near Vickerstown shortly after 7pm on Saturday night and initial post mortem results have confirmed the cause of death as drowning.

Her husband was also rescued from the water and taken to hospital in Portlaoise.

Reports this morning say the woman slipped into the canal while pushing the family car and her husband jumped into the water in an effort to save her.

The couple's four young children also reportedly witnessed the tragedy.
