Two men involved in killing 22-year-old to face sentence

Two men involved in the killing and robbery of a Leitrim man near the city centre in 2006 will be sentenced later at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Michael Carroll (aged 22), of Lower Dominick St, Dublin 1 pleaded guilty to the unlawful killing of Mr Liam McGowan (aged 22) from Kinlough, County Leitrim on August 20, 2006.

Anthony Carroll (aged 25) of St Attracta Road, Cabra pleaded guilty to robbing Mr McGowan on that date.

Their guilty pleas came just before a jury was sworn in for their trial and Judge Patricia Ryan remanded them for mention of the case later when a date for sentence will be set.

Mr McGowan died after spending three weeks on a life-support machine following the assault in the early hours of the morning near his apartment. His mobile phone and €40 were taken after he was knocked to the ground.
