More than 3,000 women living in the Republic of Ireland have been subjected to female genital mutilation (FGM), it emerged today.

Experts working directly with Ireland’s new communities said although there is no evidence the procedure is being carried out in Ireland, tougher legislation is needed to outlaw the practice.
