SIPTU calls for intervention in Aer Lingus row

SIPTU has called on the Government and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions to intervene in the row over the outsourcing of up to 1,300 jobs at Aer Lingus.

The call follows a meeting of shop stewards at Dublin Airport last night.

The Transport Minister Noel Dempsey has already ruled out any such intervention but the union has insisted that the Government is compelled to engage as it is a major shareholder.

The result of a ballot of SIPTU members on industrial action will be known on Friday.
