Harney to discuss Budget with independent TDs

The Health Minister is to meet independent TDs at lunchtime to discuss their concerns about the Budget.

Top of the agenda is most likely to be the controversy over the over 70s medical card.

Last night Mary Harney announced some modifications to the scheme, which will allow more people to qualify for the full medical card.

However, critics say it still does not go far enough.

The Irish Nursing Homes Organisation has called for a complete overhaul of the scheme.
