A week-long search in the Slieve Bloom Mountains as part of the investigation into the disappearance of missing Offaly woman Fiona Pender has proved fruitless.

The 25-year-old went missing from the flat where she lived on Church Street in Tullamore on August 22, 1996.

Gardaí sealed off a wooded area in the mountains on Monday.

A small wooden cross with Ms Pender's name written on it was found close to a walkway at Monicknew Wood last May.

Garda technical experts and the Garda Dog Unit assisted by members of the defence forces were involved in this week's search.

Gardaí said they have no plans to conduct another search.
