Protests outside Fianna Fáil convention

A group of protestors has gathered outside the Fianna Fáil think-in in Galway.

Representing 'No to Lisbon' and opposition to third-level fees, the protestors plan to give the Taoiseach Brian Cowen a loud reception when he arrives this morning.

Dave Curran of the Union of Students in Ireland has said any plans to re-introduce third-level fees will be met with immense resistance.

"We should be encouraging more people into education. According to Bank of Ireland, the cost of a four-year degree is €38,000.

"If the Government brings back fees, that could rise to €60,000 or €70,000. We think that is an unacceptable burden to be placing on students, parents and families," he said.
