Primary school pupils 'not getting enough maths support'

The much-publicised problems with maths grades in the Leaving Cert can be traced back to the primary school system, according to a report out today.

The much-publicised problems with maths grades in the Leaving Cert can be traced back to the primary school system, according to a report out today.

The Education Research Centre says it has found that learning support resources in primary schools are being directed primarily towards English, to the detriment of maths.

It says this is causing pupils to struggle with maths in later years and may be the cause of poor results in maths and science subjects at Leaving Cert level.
