The new head of the Association of Secondary Teachers is vowing to fight against any cutbacks in spending on education.

Pat Hurley, a science teacher from Midleton in Co Cork, takes over as president of the ASTI today.

He says any reduction in funding for schools would be short-sighted and bad for the economy as education is an investment in the future of the country.
