Limerick and Cork hit by major flash floods overnight

Around 3,000 households are without electricity this morning following a major flash flood in Limerick overnight.

The River Arra in Newcastle West burst its banks after heavy rains, leaving the local ESB station submerged in water.

Around 7,000 ESB customers lost power as a result, but most have been reconnected and engineers are working to restore normal services to the others.

Meanwhile, several towns in north Cork have also been affected by flash floods, with a number of motorists getting caught in the floods in Millstreet, Kanturk, Mallow and Charleville.

A bus has also been rescued from the rising water.

AA Roadwatch says several roads in Cork and Limerick remain impassable this morning.
