A reformed drug addict has offered two women he robbed at knife point €10,000 compensation each after receiving an award from the Residential Institutions Redress Board for "horrific" abuse suffered as a child.

Stephen Byrne (aged 30), was nine when he was first sent to an institution for failing to attend school and when he left aged 12, having "suffered a horrific pattern of physical and sexual abuse", he began to abuse drugs.
