A 35-year-old man is dead following a drowning accident in Strangford Lough in Co Down.

A 35-year-old man is dead following a drowning accident in Strangford Lough in Co Down.

George Darren Mulraine from Killyleagh in Co Down was collecting cockles with his father near Gibbs Island yesterday evening when he got into difficulty.

He was recovered by a member of a nearby yacht club but efforts to resuscitate him failed and he was pronounced dead.

Meanwhile, a 38-year-old man is in a serious condition in hospital after being recovered from the River Liffey in Dublin overnight.

It's understood the man fell into the river from Butt Bridge on Eden Quay.

He was rescued by two Gardaí and was taken to the Mater Hospital in Dublin where his condition is described as serious.
