Derry accused faces firearms charges

An 18-year-old man appeared in court today charged with the murder of pizza delivery man Emmett Shiels.

Garry Meenan, of Bishop’s Street, Derry, was also charged with a number of related firearms offences.

Mr Shiels was shot dead in the Creggan area of Derry on June 24 when he became involved in an altercation with masked men.

Investigating officers said the 22-year-old from Tyrconnell Street in the Bogside was a completely innocent victim.

The victim’s partner, who was heavily pregnant at the time of the murder, this week gave birth to a boy.

Meenan was remanded in custody by Derry Magistrates’ Court.

An 18-year-old woman has already appeared in court accused with attempting to pervert the course of justice in connection with the killing.

Earlier, a 16-year-old girl was released pending a report being sent to the Public Prosecution Service.

Two other youths arrested in relation to the murder have been released without charge.
