Govt set to announce major spending cutbacks

The Government is expected to announce a string of spending cutbacks this week due to the stronger-than-expected slowdown in the Irish economy.

Exchequer returns for the first half of the year are due to be published on Wednesday and are expected to show a sharp deterioration in the public finances.
