27,000 new cancer cases to be diagnosed this year

The National Cancer Registry says it expects more than 27,000 new cases of cancer to be diagnosed in Ireland this year.

In its latest annual report, it says cancer diagnoses are on the rise, largely due to many people's unhealthy lifestyles.

The Irish Cancer Society has responded by calling on the Government to provide more funding for cancer prevention measures.

The society says it spent more than 17m last year on patient care, research and health promotion services and campaigns last year.
