Man shot dead in Derry was pursued by gang of men

Police in the North are investigating the fatal shooting of a man in the Creggan area of Derry city overnight.

The incident happened just before 1am, but police officers are not believed to have arrived on the scene for a couple of hours.

A local priest says the victim, a young man who lived near the area, was pursued by a number of people before being shot.

There are also suggestions that he may have been delivering a pizza in the area.

The incident happened in a grassy area on the approach to the Creggan estate which has now been sealed off for technical examination.

A local SDLP councillor has said he fears dissident republicans may be behind the shooting as they had been issuing threats against so-called "anti-social" elements in Derry.

Pat Ramsey also said the father of the victim believes his son was killed in a case of mistaken identity.
