PSNI criticised over response to road accidents

The PSNI is failing to address road accidents as strongly as other police forces in the UK, according to a report out today.

The report is being published by Criminal Justice Inspection, a watchdog that oversees most aspects of the North's criminal justice system.

It says the PSNI's arrangements for investigating accidents and the evidence it produces for prosecution are weaker than elsewhere in the UK.

The agency says it is unacceptable that children are three times more likely to die on the North's roads and is calling for the creation of a dedicated crash investigation unit to improve the situation.

It also says a single assistant chief constable should be made responsible for policing the roads.
