A six-year-old boy is in a critical condition after a two-car crash in Co Clare this morning.

The accident happened on the Ballyvaughan road near the village of Bellharbour just after 9am.

A car apparently went out of control on a bend and collided with an oncoming vehicle.

A mother and child had to be cut from the wreckage of one of the cars and were rushed to University College Hospital Galway, where the woman is in a serious condition and the young boy is critical.

The road where the crash happened is expected to remain closed for a number of hours.
