The trade union, Unite, is backing a proposal from Sinn Féin for trade union recognition.

The proposed bill would amend the constitution to include the right for collective bargaining.

According to Sinn Féin, the European charter of fundamental rights will not guarantee workers the right to strike unless it is first enshrined in the Irish constitution.

Unite's regional secretary Jimmy Kelly said that trade unions cannot be expected to vote Yes in the Lisbon Treaty referendum when they are not being recognised.
