A Garda investigation is to be launched into the death of a man in Cork last night.

Gardaí said 36-year-old Ian Queally died at Cork University Hospital late yesterday after being brought in last Wednesday.

The man's condition worsened over the past few days and he was transferred to the intensive care unit but died there last night.

Gardaí have said it is unclear how he sustained his injuries.

Detectives investigating the death have asked anyone who might have seen Mr Queally in Cork city centre or cycling from the city to the Deerpark area the previous Tuesday night to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Anglesea Street garda station or the Garda Confidential Line.

A post mortem is being carried out today.
