Two questioned about suspicious death of Athlone woman

Two people were this evening still being questioned by gardaí in connection with the death of Lillian Scanlon.

The 48-year-old was discovered dead in a rented house in Athlone last Friday.

A post mortem was unable to determine the exact cause of her death.

However, gardaí said she had suffered a number of injuries.

A man and a woman, aged 51 and 52, were arrested separately in Athlone this morning.

The man was being questioned by Longford gardaí under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

The woman was being held at Athlone garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
