Tsvangirai to address conference in North

Zimbabwean opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai will take part in a political conference in the North today.

Mr Tsvangirai, who claims his Movement for Democratic Change won the presidential elections which are due to be re-run, will address worldwide liberal party members at the conference in Belfast today.

Mr Tsvangirai beat President Robert Mugabe in the first round on March 29, but not with enough votes to avoid a run-off.

Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade will also address delegates.

Conference organiser John Alderdice said: “We are honoured that Mr Tsvangirai and President Wade have chosen to attend our congress in Belfast.

“It is a city often seen as an example that conflict can be overcome when people choose peace and democracy over violence and tyranny.

“It is an honour for the worldwide liberal family to be in the presence of these distinguished individuals who are dedicated to pursuing basic human rights in Africa.”

This will be the 55th Congress of the Liberal International umbrella group, organised by the North’s Alliance Party. Members from more than 60 countries will be involved.

The MDC has branded the decision to hold a run-off illegal and unfair. Mr Tsvangirai has been abroad since the result because of alleged threats to his life.

At the conference, he will be addressing the issue of ending division and the problems created by prejudice.

Zimbabwe’s ruling party the Zanu-PF has announced the presidential run-off between Mugabe and Mr Tsvangirai will be held by July 31, despite opposition demands that it is held next week.

There has been alleged political violence directed against supporters of the MDC since the count.

Alliance leader David Ford said: “Morgan Tsvangirai is a beacon of hope for the whole world. We offer him our full support and hope that he is allowed to take up his rightful position as president of Zimbabwe as soon as possible.”
