FF figures discuss moves to choose Bertie’s successor
The process of choosing Bertie Ahern's successor as Taoiseach and Fianna Fáil leader is expected to get underway today.
The Tánaiste, Brian Cowen, is the odds-on favourite to get the job after being named by Mr Ahern as his chosen replacement.
However, it remains unclear if Mr Cowen will face a leadership election within Fianna Fáil or will be appointed unopposed.
A number of cabinet ministers are understood to have spent yesterday weighing up their options.
Senior Fianna Fáil figures are expected to be in contact today to discuss the situation amid speculation that the next party leader could be chosen within the next two weeks.
