Driver killed in canal plunge

An elderly man died after the car he was driving crashed into the Grand Canal, gardai said tonight.

The 70-year-old was taken from the car in a stretch of the water near Vickerstown, Portlaoise shortly after midday.

Gardai said the car was lying submerged in the canal.

The dead man was removed from the car and taken to Portlaoise Hospital.
