Roads chief to be quizzed over tunnel closures

TDs and Senators will question the National Roads Authority (NRA) today about recent closures of the Port Tunnel.

Employers’ group Ibec has warned that continuing problems with the €750m underpass are causing traffic gridlock which is costing businesses.

Both lanes of the tunnel were closed for several hours on February 27 after a safety systems failure.

Earlier this month the southbound lane was also shut after a tyre on a truck caught fire.

NRA chief executive Fred Barry will address the Oireachtas Transport Committee on the issue today and take questions from TDs and Senators.

The all-party body will also receive submissions from the Railway Procurement Agency (RPA) on the construction of the Metro and progress on integrated ticketing.

The possibility of buses using the Luas lines is also due to be discussed.
