Govt to seek designer for new Troubles monument

The Government is to launch an international competition to design a memorial for the almost 3,400 people killing during the Troubles.

The monument will be located at Carrickarnon, on the border between Co Louth and Co Armagh.

Details of the international competition will be announced today by Foreign Affairs Minister Dermot Ahern, who is a TD for the area.

Meanwhile, a dispute over a new memorial to the victims of the Omagh atrocity has finally been resolved after the local District Council agreed to the wording "dissident republican terrorist car bomb".

The families of the victims had feared this wording may have been watered down on the new permanent memorial.
