Charred remains found in Galway identified

A badly burned body found in a shed at the back of a derelict house was confirmed tonight as that of a missing local man.

Gardaí said it had been identified as 28-year-old Richard Carrig of St Joseph’s Place in Ballinasloe, Co Galway.

He had last been seen alive in the early hours of last Saturday morning.

His body was discovered in the shed behind the house in Ballinasloe yesterday. So badly were the burn injuries that officers were initially unable to say whether they had found a man or woman.

Following a post mortem examination by State Pathologist Dr Marie Chassid, gardaí said they were not treating the death as suspicious and that they had ruled out foul play.

A spokesman described the death as a “terrible tragedy”.
