Paraplegic faces extradition to UK to face murder charges

A paraplegic wanted by police investigating a murder in the UK will tonight be extradited from Ireland.

Jason Brady will board a flight with British officers to face charges in connection with the death of a man in the UK more than six years ago.

The 27-year-old, who has been confined to a wheelchair since a car accident in 2006, lost his appeal against extradition in Ireland’s highest court earlier this month.

However due to his medical condition and requirements, the Chief Justice, Mr John L Murray, postponed making the order for 10 days.

The Supreme Court today affirmed the order as the suspect surrendered himself to the Bridewell Garda Station in Dublin, where he will be held for the day.

“Arrangements have been made for a flight this evening at 6pm, so Mr Brady and British police are travelling over then,” Robert Barron, counsel for the State, told the three-judge bench.

Brady, of Cushlawn Drive, Tallaght, is wanted in connection with the death of Charles William Tandy on December 10, 2001.

Mr Tandy died and another person was injured when he was hit by a stolen car which was fleeing a technology building at Redding Lane, Tyseley, Birmingham, after a laptop had been stolen.

Brady was identified as the prime suspect for the killing 10 days after the incident, but requesting authorities in the UK only issued a European Arrest Warrant in July 2006.

During a High Court hearing last year, lawyers for Brady contested extradition on the basis that his client was terrified his medical needs may not be met in a British prison and argued the delay in issuing the warrant was prejudicial.

But the judge found that while Brady was entitled to every sympathy for his parlous condition, he was satisfied that there was no basis on health grounds to refuse the order for his surrender.
