Policing Board to review Omagh bomb investigation

The North's Policing Board is to carry out an independent review of the investigation into the Omagh bombing.

The decision was made after a board meeting yesterday to consider damning comments made about the police by the judge who acquitted a south Armagh man of any involvement in the atrocity.

In clearing Sean Hoey of all charges, including the murders of the 29 victims, the judge said two officers had lied under oath in court and the police investigation had been slipshod.

The Policing Board has now decided to set up its own inquiry to consider the deficiencies of the initial investigation carried out when Ronnie Flanagan was chief constable.
