Ahern dismisses calls for EU intervention in Kenya

Foreign Affairs Minister Dermot Ahern is dismissing calls from GOAL's John O'Shea for direct EU intervention to stop the violence in Kenya.

Mr Ahern also says any Irish army involvement as part of an EU peace-enforcement group would require triple-lock approval of the Oireachtas, the Government and the UN.

He has accepted, however, that the UN will have to intervene if ethnic violence in the African country gets significantly worse.

At least 300 people have been killed in recent days during mob attacks prompted by the re-election of President Mwai Kibaki in a vote that most people believe was rigged.
