A murder investigation is underway in Drogheda, after a man who was assaulted in the early hours of St Stephen's day has died.

A murder investigation is underway in Drogheda, after a man who was assaulted in the early hours of St Stephen's day has died.

The 29-year-old was found with serious head injuries, in the driveway of a house in Rowan Heights in Drogheda, just after 3am on Wednesday.

He was rushed first to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, and then to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, but has since died.

Gardaí have named him as Darren McKeown of New Heights, Donore in Co Meath.

Three young men who were arrested in relation to the investigation have all been released without charge and a file will go to the Director of Prosecutions.

A further arrest was made at 8pm last night - a 19-year-old man is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Drogheda Garda Station.
