Cowen urged not to cut spending for disadvantaged

Lobby groups representing the less well-off in society are warning the Minister for Finance not to cut real social spending in his budget this afternoon.

Brian Cowen's spending plans are limited by a slowdown in the tax take, but pressure groups say he must not introduce any cutbacks in aid to the poor and disadvantaged.
