Driver killed in Monaghan collision

A man was killed in a car crash on the main N2 road which runs between Dublin and the north west, gardaí said tonight.

The two car collision happened on a stretch of the national route at Lismeenan, Castleshane, about 8km south of Monaghan town.

One of the drivers, a man in his late 50s, was pronounced dead at Monaghan General Hospital after the car he was driving struck another car.

Gardaí said they are investigating the crash which occurred shortly before 6pm.

The usually busy road was closed for a time afterwards and diversions were put in place.

The scene was preserved for Garda forensic collision investigators to carry out an examination.
