Dissident republicans are being blamed for the shooting of an off-duty PSNI officer in the North yesterday evening.

The man is in a stable condition in hospital after being shot a number of times while sitting in his car at traffic lights in Co Tyrone.

The incident happened on Circular Road in Dungannon at around 5.30pm, just after the victim had left work.

He managed to drive back to Dungannon police station, from where he was taken to hospital.

The shooting was very similar to a gun attack on another off-duty PSNI officer in Derry last week.

The Real IRA has claimed responsibility for that shooting.
