Drumm to face questions on Portlaoise cancer scandal

The head of the HSE is expected to come under pressure in relation to the Portlaoise cancer scandal today when he gives his annual briefing to TDs and Senators at Leinster House.

The head of the Health Service Executive (HSE) is expected to come under pressure in relation to the Portlaoise cancer scandal today when he gives his annual briefing to TDs and Senators at Leinster House.

Professor Brendan Drumm is likely to face questions about what action was taken following warnings about the cancer service at Midland Regional Hospital.

The warning was contained in a letter sent by a consultant surgeon to Minister for Health Mary Harney in July 2005.

Speaking in the Dáil last night, Ms Harney said the concerns were sent on to the HSE for urgent examination and appropriate attention.

However, it is unknown what action, if any, was taken by the HSE.
