Gardaí investigating the death of a 74-year-old man in Cork have upgraded their enquiry to a murder investigation.

Christy 'Gussy' Hornibrook, who was a bachelor and lived alone, was last seen on Monday night at around 9.30pm.

Yesterday, his body was discovered at the back of his house at Temple Acre Avenue in Gurranbraher.

Following the results of a post mortem examination this afternoon, gardaí launched a murder inquiry.

Investigators have not revealed the specific cause of death in case it prejudices aspects of the case at a later stage.

They said there were no significant injuries about Mr Hornibrook's body.

Crime Scene Investigators and the Garda Technical Bureau today continued to examine the scene, while gardaí renewed their appeal for anyone with information to come forward.
