Gardaí in Cork are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a pensioner whose body was found at his home in the city yesterday.

Seventy-four-year-old Christopher 'Gussie' Hornibrook was found in the kitchen of his home in Guarranabraher yesterday with his feet and one of his hands bound.

He had not been seen for around 24 hours when he was discovered by a neighbour.

Gardaí are treating the pensioner's death as suspicious, but say it is too early to tell if it was the result of a botched robbery.

Reports this morning say there were no immediate indicators of violence at the scene and no obvious signs of trauma to the body.

While it was ransacked, the generally untidy state of the Mr Hornibrook's house is understood to be making it difficult for gardaí to confirm if an actual robbery took place.
