LRC to oversee further talks in bid to avert ESB strike

The Labour Relations Commission is due to oversee further talks today in a bid to avert strike action at Ireland's largest electricity generation station.

The TEEU is threatening to go on strike from tomorrow as part of a row involving 200 Polish workers employed by a sub-contractor.

The workers lost their jobs in recent days when their Polish employer's contract was terminated by a German firm carrying out refurbishment work on the Moneypoint power plant in Co Clare.

They have not been paid for around six weeks and the TEEU is demanding that the ESB take responsibility for their situation.

It says this is the third time that major problems have arisen with contractors working for the ESB.

Moneypoint provides around one-fifth of Ireland's electricity and strike action could result in power cuts around the country.
