Coroner to press ahead with Lusk post office inquest

The Dublin City Coroner has decided to press ahead with the inquest into the deaths of two post office raiders at the hands of armed gardaí.

The Garda Ombudsman Commission had made a last-minute request to halt the proceedings after receiving a complaint alleging inappropriate use of lethal force.

However, Coroner Brian Farrell rejected the request yesterday and was highly critical of the way the commission handled the situation.

The jury is now set to resume deliberations tomorrow.

Colm Griffin and Eric Hopkins were shot dead by armed gardaí while trying to steal cash from Lusk Post Office in north Co Dublin in May 2005.

Mr Griffin had pointed a gun at gardaí, but Mr Hopkins was unarmed at the time.
