Taoiseach Bertie Ahern tonight survived his first motion of no confidence in the Dáil parliament, sparked by controversies surrounding his 1990s financial affairs.

Opposition leaders had accused Mr Ahern of misleading an anti-corruption inquiry and demanded his resignation from office during a sometimes heated three-and-a-half hour debate.
