Galway Council to discuss new water crisis

An emergency meeting of Galway City Council will take place today amid the contamination of drinking water in the city.

Management has bowed to public demand for the meeting over the e-coli outbreak in Knocknacarra.

The City Council meeting is expected to begin at 2 o'clock today and comes as beleaguered householders are subject to a boil water notice for the second time this year.

Councillors are demanding an investigation in to the cause of the E-coli bacteria, which has contaminated the supply of more than 15,000 homes in the Knocknacarra area.

Some councillors will be calling for free bottled water for householders affected, who have received information leaflets from the council about the contamination.

Investigations continue into the source of the bacteria which usually comes from human or animal waste.
