Former Sinn Féin assemblyman dies

Former Sinn Féin assemblyman John Kelly has died after a long illness.

Mr Kelly was no longer active in politics, having been de-selected for his assembly seat, and later criticised the party’s decision to embrace policing.

Born in Belfast, he had been involved in the Republican movement for many years and was implicated in the 1970s’ IRA gun-running Arms Trial which included senior members of the Irish government.
