Man remanded after wife's murder

A 48-year old man was today remanded in custody after he appeared before Dublin District Court charged with the murder of his wife.

David Burke, of La Verna Dale, Carpenterstown, was arrested by gardaí on Tuesday hours after wife Jean Gilbert was found stabbed to death at the same address.

Sgt William Kelly today told Judge Derek McVeigh that Burke was arrested at around 4.45pm.

He was detained at Blanchardstown garda station and last night charged with her murder.

Judge McVeigh granted a garda application to have Burke remanded to appear before Cloverhill District Court on September 6.

Defence solicitor Eugene Dunne consented to the remand.

Burke, who made no reply after he was charged, sat impassively in the courtroom dressed in a multi-coloured shirt, red tie and khakis.

Gardaí were called to the house at around 10.40am on Tuesday morning after receiving a disturbance call.

Ms Gilbert, 46, was rushed to James Connolly Memorial Hospital, Blanchardstown, but died from her injuries.

A post mortem examination carried out by state pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy later confirmed the 46-year-old died from stab wounds to the chest and back.

She had three children, a girl and two boys, aged 10,7 and 4.

They were in the house at the time of the incident.

The house was sealed off and a full garda forensic examination was launched.
