Police fear more violence in North

Police in the North fear more bloodshed after a policeman was shot and man was stabbed during violent loyalist clashes in Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim last night.

The police officer is also recovering in hospital and his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Three men were arrested in a car when police found CS spray, a cross bow and baseball bats.

A power struggle has been waging within the UDA for months now.

Some leaders, like South-west Belfast commander Jackie McDonald, want to move on and leave violence and criminality behind. However those concentrated in north Belfast and south-east Antrim are resisting the move.

Several leaders of the dissident factions have been exiled by the UDAs inner council, but have later returned to defy the leadership.
