Former Tánaiste John Wilson has died aged 84
The Taoiseach has paid tribute to former Tánaiste John Wilson, who has died.
The 84-year-old had a long political life with Fianna Fáil, after he was first elected as a TD for Cavan in 1973.
He served as Minister for Education, Minister for Posts and Telegraphs and Minister for Tourism and Transport.
It is understood he died in his sleep in the early hours of this morning, after celebrating his 84th birthday with his family yesterday.
Bertie Ahern said he regrets the passing of a loyal friend, a wise colleague and a man who used his abundant ability in the service of his country.
