Oil tankers may be banned from Dublin Port Tunnel

The operators of the Dublin Port Tunnel are reportedly planning to ban oil tankers from using the facility for safety reasons.

The operators of the Dublin Port Tunnel are reportedly planning to ban oil tankers from using the facility for safety reasons.

Reports this morning say the decision has been made at the request of Dublin Fire Brigade following an accident in which a turbo-charger blew on an oil tanker while it was in the tunnel three weeks ago.

The Fire Brigade is concerned about the risk of a serious fire resulting from such an incident.

If oil tankers are banned from the tunnel, it could force Dublin City Council to alter its city-centre HGV ban and allow up to 300 such vehicles to enter the city every day.
