Justice Minister Brian Lenihan has announced a series of measures aimed at cracking down on drugs, violence and gangland activity in Irish prisons.

Justice Minister Brian Lenihan has announced a series of measures aimed at cracking down on drugs, violence and gangland activity in Irish prisons.

Mr Lenihan said last night that 178 prison staff would be recruited as soon as possible to take part in a special unit aimed at preventing drugs, weapons and mobile phones from being smuggled into jail.
