Pope to canonise new 'Irish' saint today

Pope Benedict is to canonise a new Irish Saint in St Peter's Square in Rome.

President McAleese will attend the ceremony in the Vatican.

Blessed Charles of Mount Argus was born in the Netherlands, but became known for his holiness in south Dublin in the late 19th Century.

Before that, he also helped Irish people in England, who were fleeing famine in the 1850s.

He is the first Irish Saint to be canonised since Saint Oliver Plunkett in 1975.
